USSF Dan Rank Requirements for Its Members

From the USSF Bylaws:
 
Article 1.  The judging of sumo ranks shall be carried out concerning the following items:
 
(1)  The character of the person being judged.
(2)  Physical strength and skill at sumo as well as actual record.
(3)  Meritorious service with regard to sumo.
(4)  Ability and actual record regarding coaching sumo.
(5)  Ability and actual record regarding refereeing sumo.
(6)  The degree of knowledge and understanding of sumo.
 

The Ranks and additional requirements below are officially recognized and sanctioned by the INTERNATIONAL SUMO FEDERATION.

 
For Shodan (Rank Certificate Fee $30)

 

Applicant must be 15+ years of age and satisfy any one of the following requirements:

1.   Minimum of six months training, and a placing finish in the World Sumo Championships (WSC).

2.   Minimum of one year training, and a placing finish in a National or International Tournament.

3.   Minimum of two years training, and competing in a National or International Tournament three or more times.

4.   Minimum of three years training, and competing in USSF-sanctioned National or Local Tournaments three times or more.

5.   (Non-competitors) Minimum of four years training and officiating experience.

 
For Nidan (Rank Certificate fee $40)
 

Applicant must be 18+ years of age, hold Shodan rank, and satisfy any one of the following requirements:

1.   Minimum of one year training after Shodan, and a placing finish in the WSC.

2.   Minimum of three years training after Shodan, and a placing finish in a National or International Tournament.

3.   Minimum of four years training after Shodan, and competing in USSF-sanctioned National or Local Tournaments three times or more.

4.   (Non-competitors) Minimum of five years training and officiating experience after Shodan.

 
For Sandan (Rank Certificate fee $50)
 

Applicant must be 21+ years of age, hold Nidan rank, and satisfy any one of the following requirements:

1.   Minimum of one year training after Nidan, and a placing finish in WSC.

2.   Minimum of three years training after Nidan, and a placing finish in a National or International Tournament.

3.   Minimum of four years training after Nidan, and competing in USSF-sanctioned National or Local Tournaments three times or more.

4.   (Non-competitors) Minimum of six years training and officiating experience after Nidan.
